“…The current and previously published results (Huh et al, 2012;Liu et al 2013;Park et al, in press;Stengel et al, 2012) mutually reinforce the correlation of irisin with BMI and strongly suggest that plasma irisin levels reflect the net adipose tissue in humans. Moreover, it was described a positive correlation between FNDC5 muscle Non-regainers subjects with successful weight maintenance (n 5 38) and regainers, subjects with weight regain 4 months after ending the hypocaloric diet (n 5 39).…”

“…Surprisingly, a recent report has revealed a significant decrease in circulating irisin and adipose and muscle tissue gene expression levels in obesity, suggesting that irisin is inversely associated with different adiposity markers (Moreno-Navarrete et al, 2013). On the other hand, low circulating irisin levels were associated with chronic kidney disease (Wen et al, 2013), intrahepatic triglycerides content in obese adults with non alcoholic fatty liver disease (Zhang et al, 2013) and with type 2 diabetes (Choi et al, 2013;Liu et al, 2013). All together these reports highlight the need of further research to elucidate the true role of irisin in health and disease (Polyzos et al, 2013).…”

“…There is a possibility that irisin may be a surrogate marker for MetS. Most studies in adults showed that levels of irisin were linked to the incidence of T2DM [7], insulin resistance [19,20], and dyslipidemia [21], which are components of MetS. However, there were discrepancies reporting the relationship between irisin and metabolic diseases.…”

“…Myokines are induced by exercise in rodents and humans, are related to browning in adipose tissue and are found to increase energy expenditure in mice without influencing movement and food intake, leading to a decrease in obesity and an improvement in glucose homeostasis [6]. Recent studies have reported that irisin is linked to T2DM [7] and MetS [8] in adults. However, there are only a few studies that have evaluated the relationship between irisin and MetS in pediatrics.…”

“…Interestingly, the K153R polymorphism in the gene (MSTN) encoding myostatin could be associated with EL, as shown by previous research from our group . There is some controversy among the numerous studies that have assessed circulating blood levels of irisin in people with obesity, diabetes, and CVD (Huh et al 2012;Choi et al 2013;Liu et al 2013;MorenoNavarrete et al 2013;Park et al 2013;Stengel et al 2013;Vamvini et al 2013;Sanchis-Gomar et al 2014a;Sanchis-Gomar et al 2014b). Some authors have expressed their concerns about the notion that irisin is a real myokine (i.e., being released by contracting muscles) or that this molecule has actual beneficial effects on health (Timmons et al 2012;Erickson 2013;Pekkala et al 2013;Raschke et al 2013).…”
