Cell membrane camouflaged nanoparticles: a new biomimetic platform for cancer photothermal therapy

Abstract: Targeted drug delivery by nanoparticles (NPs) is an essential technique to achieve the ideal therapeutic effect for cancer. However, it requires large amounts of work to imitate the biomarkers on the surface of the cell membrane and cannot fully retain the bio-function and interactions among cells. Cell membranes have been studied to form biomimetic NPs to achieve functions like immune escape, targeted drug delivery, and immune modulation, which inherit the ability to interact with the in vivo environments. “…Au NPs encapsulated with the antitumour drug paclitaxel-coated by anti-EpCam antibodies-modified red blood cell membranes show increased cancer-targeting ability due to anti-EpCam antibodies. Paclitaxel can be released when the membrane is destroyed by the heat generated from the Au NPs under laser irradiation to yield the anticancer effect [ 134 ].…”

“…Particularly, endogenous cell-biomimetic NPs, also known as exosomes, can have their natural properties—inherited various endogenous molecules bound onto the bilayer of the biomimetic exosomes—and endogenous peptides, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and microRNAs included inside the exosomes. Owing to these features, biomimetic exosomes can exhibit specific targeting [ 248 ]. In a recent study, platelet membrane vesicles (PMVs) were exploited as a specific thrombus-targeting strategy for the treatment of ischemic stroke.…”
