A preliminary checklist of the bryoflora of the Taita Hills, Kenya

Abstract: Abstract.A checklist of the bryoflora of the Taita Hills (Kenya) containing 168 taxa in 40 families is presented. Whilst previously only 22 mosses and 39 liverworts were recorded for the area, this study extended our knowledge to 85 and 83 respectively. Twenty taxa are newly recorded for Kenya.

“…The massif is known as Dabida Hill, with an elevation of 1400-2200 m. Forest patches on Dabida Hill included in this study are Ngangao (120 ha), Chawia (86 ha), Yale (16 ha) and Vuria (\1 ha). Ngangao is located on a steep eastern slope of a north-southoriented ridge at 1700-1952 m. Chawia is located at the top of a cliff and has gentle slopes between 1470 and 1600 m. Yale is located on a north-southoriented mountain ridge with very steep slopes between 1750 and 2104 m (Pellikka et al 2009 (Beentje and Ndiang'ui 1988;Bytebier 2001;Pellikka et al 2009). …”

“…In Taita Hills, this forest type is represented on the four main peaks (Mbololo, Ngangao, Chawia and Sagalla). The keystone species, Ocotea usambarensis and Podocarpus latifolius, have been extracted for timber in the past and now only occur in small diameter classes (Bytebier 2001;Mbuthia 2003). Vuria and Yale may be high altitude, degraded variants.…”

“…These observations contradict the previously reported panmixia and absence of differentiation in P. taitae populations that was based on morphometric and cytogenetic studies. 4 Genetic studies on other co-distributed avian species present differing scenarios: strong differentiation between fragments and mutation-drift disequilibrium have been reported for the endangered Taita thrush (Turdus helleri), 14 whereas habitat fragmentation was found to have no apparent effect on the dispersal of the white-starred robin (Pogonocichla stellata) between different Table 1. forest fragments.…”

“…2,3 Because of their age, isolated location, and comparatively stable climatic conditions, the Taita Hills are a global biodiversity hotspot characterized by high levels of endemicity. 4,5 Some of the endemic fauna include the Taita reed frog (Hyperolius viridiflavus glandicolor), the Taita thrush (Turdus helleri), the Taita white-eye (Zosterops poliogaster silvanus) and the Taita apalis (Apalis thoracica fuscigularis).…”

“…I suggest, based on this survey, that Table 1 The nine forest blocks that were searched for Gulella taitensis, with approximate size of each block, search effort and the numbers of snails recorded in each. Forest areas taken from Githiru & Lens (2004), Bytebier (2001) and Kalle (2001).…”
