Lubrication in refrigeration systems: Numerical model for piston dynamics considering oil-refrigerant interaction

Abstract: Piston dynamics plays a fundamental role in several processes related to the operation of hermetic reciprocating compressors used in refrigeration. For example, the refrigerant leakage through the radial clearance between piston and cylinder, which reduces compressor pumping efficiency, and also the viscous friction associated with the lubricant film in the radial clearance, which is related to energy consumption. It is important to optimize such variables, ensuring at the same time smooth operation of the pis… Show more

“…The shaft power of reciprocating compressor is 500 kW, and the piston stroke and motor rotation speed are 240 mm and 496 rpm respectively. The pistons were derived by a two-stage crank-connecting rod transmission mechanism, and the connecting rod was assembled to crankshaft and crosshead pin with sliding bearings respectively [16][17][18]. Due to tolerances and defects in manufacturing process or wearing, bearing clearance will increase after a certain working period [19,20].…”

“…The two-phase flow model was applied to investigate the piston dynamics of a small ringless reciprocating compressor [70]. The model predicted a power consumption similar to the single-phase model considering oil-refrigerant viscosity.…”

“…If the pressure reduction is fast enough, bubble nucleation is so intense that foam can be formed (Becerra, 2003). It has been argued that cavitation and degassing phenomena can affect the compressor performance parameters such as power consumption and volumetric efficiency, and also provoke noise and wear (Grando et al, 2006a).…”
