Luminescent Platinum(II) Complexes Containing Cyclometallated Diaryl Ketimine Ligands: Synthesis, Photophysical and Computational Properties

Abstract: A new series of platinum(II) complexes containing cyclometallated diaryl ketimine ligands has been synthesised. The route involves reaction of diaryl ketimines with K[PtCl 3 (dmso)] to obtain trans-[PtCl 2 (imine)(dmso)] species, which underwent cyclometallation upon heating in toluene to give [PtCl{ArЈ(ArC=NH)}(dmso)] complexes 12b-17b. NHydroxy and N-phenyl analogues 18b and 21 were also synthesised. In complexes 19 and 20 the auxiliary chlorido and dmso ligands were replaced by an acetylacetonato ligand. Th… Show more

“…Cyclopalladated benzophenone imines 1-4 were prepared according to themethods recently reported by our research group [32]. Mixture A was prepared by a modification of the reported procedure for the cycloplatination of benzophenone imine [43,44]. Cis-[PtCl2(DMSO)2] and NaOAc inmolar ratio 1:1 were treated with an excess of benzophenone imine in dry methanol under nitrogen and at reflux for 24 h. In these conditions, we were able to isolate mixture A in a moderate amount, which contained as major components the cycloplatinated compounds [Pt(C,N)Cl(L)] A1 (L= DMSO) and A2 (L= benzophenone imine).…”

“…The influence of excited-state distortion has also been considered for a series of Pt(II) complexes with imine-based N^C-coordinating ligands, of which two examples are shown in Fig. 2.19 [78]. Both complexes showed almost no emission in solution at 298 K, despite the structural resemblance to numerous successful emitters such as Pt(N^C-ppy)(acac).…”

“…Pandya et al. reported a new Pt(II) complex ( 147) containing cyclometalated diaryl ketimine ligands 94. The OLED device fabricated using the complex (phosphorescence maxima at 529 and 562 nm; quantum yield 4.3 %) yielded a maximum EQE of 0.25 % with a maximum brightness of ∼18 cd m −2 .…”
