Lumping Kinetics of Hydrodesulfurization and Hydrodenitrogenation of the Middle Distillate From Chinese Shale Oil

Abstract: The hydrogenation experiments of the middle distillate (MD) of Chinese Huadian shale oil were carried out in a bench-scale trickle-bed reactor using a commercial catalyst Ni-Mo-W/Al 2 O 3 under various operating conditions. Three kinds of lumping kinetic models were developed in order to compare their capabilities to predict the concentrations of sulfur and nitrogen in hydrotreated oil samples. The results showed that three-lump and four-lump models can be reasonably used to describe hydrodesulfurization (HDS)… Show more

“…Some processes have employed an ebullated bed reactor, which represents a three-phase fluidized bed reactor [72-74, 79, 91]. A trickle bed reactor has also been used by some researchers [88,103,104]. This type of reactor similarly involves three phases, but the solid phase is stationary.…”

“…Parameter uncertainties were estimated from the covariance matrix. The 95% confidence interval of parameter estimate θ i can be calculated using Equation (10), where se θi is the standard error of parameter θ i approximated as the square root of the diagonal element of the covariance matrix and t (0.95, df) is the value of the Student t-distribution at 95% confidence level for df degrees of freedom. The covariance matrix was estimated via the inverse of the Hessian matrix (i.e., the negative second-order partial derivatives of the objective function).…”

“…Hydroprocessing kinetic modeling is a challenging and time-consuming task as the crude oils contain many compounds with complicated structures [6]. Diverse approaches for hydroprocessing modeling have been developed in the past such as the lumping technique [7][8][9][10][11][12], detailed kinetic modeling [13][14][15][16][17][18][19], and black-box approach [20][21][22][23]. The lumping technique, which consists of regrouping chemical compounds with similar properties, is the most common and widely used [24].…”

“…Hydrotreating processes could help solve some of the challenges with shale oil by removing pollutants like sulfur and nitrogen and by increasing the economic value of the fuel. Indeed, a fair amount of research has been done on hydrotreating shale oil [30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38] , and Eesti Energia, a company which produces shale oil, has done preliminary investigations with the goal of incorporating a hydrotreating unit into their shale oil plant 39 . Data on the hydrogen solubility of shale oil would be important for research and design work done in this field.…”
