Lung cancer biopsy dislodges tumor cells into circulating blood

Abstract: Aim:A "seed" of lung cancer metastasis is circulating tumor cells (CTCs), which may be dislodged from a tumor during biopsy. This possibility was assessed among patients who underwent lung tumor biopsy using flexible fiber-topic bronchoscopy (FFB). Methods: The study involved six patients with non-small cell lung cancer who underwent FFB biopsy to diagnose a lesion pathologically (5 males and 1 female, median age 63 years, 6 adenocarcinomas, of 4 clinical-stage IA, 1 stage IB, and 1 stage IIIA), CTCs were extr… Show more

“…In this respect, a recent study analyzed CTC in peripheral vein blood samples obtained before and after lung tumor biopsy using flexible fiber-topic bronchoscopy. In 2/6 patients, CTC were absent before bronchoscopy but they were detected after lung biopsy (13). In early lung cancer, CTC can be detected in the pulmonary vein (PV) blood in addition to the peripheral blood.…”

“…Aside from VFL, other modalities can also cause the release of CTCs. Bronchoscopic biopsies cause CTC release [19]. In addition, preoperative bronchoscopy with uoroscopic imaging has been reported to be associated with a high incidence of recurrence [20].…”

“…In brief, BFS was an independent indicator of recurrence, but successful diagnosis by TBB, which is a surrogate marker of disruption of the main tumor, was not an indicator of recurrence. It should be noted that there is evidence of lung cancer biopsy dislodging tumor cells into the circulating blood (4).…”

“…This has been shown both in ex vivo resected lung, and through tumor cell dislodgement by TBB resulting in circulating tumor cells (4). It should, also, be noted that inflammation has been suggested to play a key role in lung carcinogenesis (5) and that both chronic inflammation and acute inflammation is associated with tumorigenesis (6,7).…”
