“…Nevertheless, the chemical composition of waterpipe smoke, which seems to contain toxicants in quantities similar or even higher than cigarette smoke, may give biological plausibility for the associations we found [32][33][34][35][36]. Moreover, waterpipe active smoking was shown to be a cause of several respiratory diseases and cancers [37][38][39]. schools (OR = 1.67; p < 0.001), higher age categories (p < 0.001), male sex (OR = 1.36; p < 0.001), and a father and a mother's lower education (p < 0.001) were associated with higher odds of probable asthma, defined as physician diagnosed asthma or asthma symptoms (all wheezing) ( Table 1).…”

“…There are numerous epidemiological studies which have associated increased risk of esophageal, head and neck 22 and lung cancer [22][23][24] development with shisha smoking. However, laboratory studies to yield mechanistic insights into shisha mediated molecular alterations have not been carried out.…”

“…For some, the combination of the 2 behaviors is more enjoyable than hookah smoking alone. This potential risk for increased hookah smoking comes with the potential for increased risk of negative health outcomes associated with hookah smoking (eg, carbon monoxide poisoning, 36–44 communicable diseases, 45,46 cancer 4750 ). If hookah smoking continues to gain popularity and becomes available in locations and events where alcohol is typically consumed, the risk for hookah smoking also may increase.…”
