Lung ultrasonography to diagnose community-acquired pneumonia in children

Abstract: BackgroundEarly diagnosis of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is essential to reduce the total burden of this disease. Traditionally, chest radiography (CR) is used to identify true CAP. However, CR is not a perfect diagnostic test for CAP. The use of lung ultrasonography (LUS) has been suggested as an alternative to overcome the problems associated with CR and increase the feasibility and accuracy of CAP diagnosis. LUS has largely been used for the diagnosis of several lung problems, including CAP, in adult… Show more

“…During hospitalization, lung US was obtained in all children to define the characteristics of pleural fluid collection and/or to guide drain positioning; it was repeated only in two patients at follow‐up. US imaging has been recently suggested as a promising alternative to chest radiography in recognizing pneumonia and pleural involvement, but the role of this technique to evaluate the evolution of lung abnormalities in children with pneumonia remains unclear …”

“…Community‐acquired pneumonia (CAP) is associated with high morbidity and mortality among children worldwide, and approximately 1 million children younger than 5 years die of this disease annually . Over the last 10 years, lung ultrasound (US) has been widely studied as an alternative diagnostic tool for adult and pediatric CAP with excellent results . Compared with chest radiography, lung US is less expensive, less invasive, and more easily repeatable.…”

“…1,2 Over the last 10 years, lung ultrasound (US) has been widely studied as an alternative diagnostic tool for adult and pediatric CAP with excellent results. 3,4 Compared with chest radiography, lung US is less expensive, less invasive, and more easily repeatable. For these reasons, lung US can easily be used not only for the diagnosis of CAP but also for monitoring of the response to therapy, as suggested by recent research.…”

“…Additionally, physicians can be trained to use the lung ultrasound machines and diagnose the patient, and treatment does not need to be delayed while waiting for a radiologist to read radiographic images. Using lung ultrasound for diagnosing pneumonia, however, is still in investigational stages, and its efficacy for measuring pneumonia is still to be determined 50 51 .…”
