Lutzomyia Lewisi, a new Phlebotomine sandfly (Diptera: Psychodidae) from Cojedes State, Venezuela

Phlebotomine sandflies were surveyed in two ecologically contrasted areas, the northern moist and southern wet tropical forests, of the Territorio Federal Amazonas, Venezuela. Three new taxa and twenty-one new records were added to the previously known species list for Venezuelan sandflies, which now totals eighty species. Both sexes of Lutzomyia (Psychodopygus) killicki sp.n., L. (Trichophoryomyia) bettinii sp.n., L. (Nyssomyia) olmeca reducta subsp.n. and and the females of L. bernalei Osorno et al., Brumptomyia pintoi Costa Lima and L. begonae (Ortiz & Torres) are described and illustrated.

ABSTRACT. A check-list of new species, descriptions of other sex of previously described species, redescriptions. proposals of synonymy, and new status for species previously in synonymy or described as subspecies for american sand nics (Diptera, Psychodidae. Phlebotominae), for the period 1975-1993. and not included in the revision of MARTINS el al. (1978). arc presenled. KEY WORDS. Diplera. Psychodidae. Phlebolominae, check-list Since the publication of the revision on american sand flies (MARTINS et al. 1978), a lot of new species and other sex of previously described species, and proposals os synonymy, new states, and revalidation of species were published. A list of all these proposals would be useful to make easier the identification and the research of these insects and is presented here. The type localities and the sites where the types of new taxa were deposited are also cited.Several systems were proposed for Phlebotomine sand flies (ABONNENC & LEGER 1976a,b; LEWIS et al. 1977;MARTINS et al. 1978;READY et al. 1980READY et al. , 1981. The system of MARTINS et al. (1978) is widely accepted and it was used here. The species are distributed on Ihe subgenera and groups, mostly based on comments of the describers.

BackgroundSand flies (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotominae) are biting flies involved in the transmission of pathogens, including the protozoan parasite Leishmania amongst human and non-human animals (Rangel and Lainson 2009).New informationA total of 60 species of American Phlebotominae (Diptera: Psychodidae), distributed amongst 16 genera were studied. A checklist of the primary and secondary type specimens held at the Natural History Museum, London (NHMUK), is given and 968 photographs of the specimens and their labels are made available on a Scratchpads website http://phlebotominaenhmtypes.myspecies.info.
