LWD NMR for Hydrocarbon Typing and Formation Evaluation in a Challenging Offshore Trajectory

Abstract: The well within the context of this case study consists of reservoirs are sequences of permeable sands interbedded with variable proportions of silt and clay. Gas is the target hydrocarbon type, but light oil / condensate can be present unexpectedly. In these depleted reservoirs, hydrocarbons typing are complicated by their reduced volumes and corresponding diminished effect on conventional logs. Wells are highly deviated and targets don't align in the same direction leading to high trajectories tortuosity. Th… Show more

“…However, NMR logging while drilling (NMR-LWD) tools, which started appearing in the oil/gas industry in the early 2000s [ 89 , 90 , 91 , 92 , 93 , 94 ], could determine and identify different fluid phases and their dynamics in geological formations in real-time, while drilling, thus saving time and reducing the cost in a drilling operation. NMR-LWD is rapidly becoming an important logging tool in the oil/gas industry [ 95 ] and more recent works on NMR [ 96 , 97 , 98 , 99 , 100 , 101 , 102 , 103 ] continue to drive advancements in NMR-LWD tools to provide more accurate and better characterization of geological formations [ 104 , 105 , 106 , 107 , 108 , 109 ].…”

“…Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging technology utilizes the magnetic field generated by highpower alternating current (AC) to stimulate the NMR phenomenon in the formation material [1,2]. To excite a sufficiently strong magnetic field, the switching devices in the power transmitting circuits need to work under high-frequency, high-voltage, and high-current environments, which means that the loss of the switching devices will be relatively large, and the service life of the devices will also be affected [3,4]. With the increasing demand for logging in transmitting frequency and voltage level [5], the current widely used power transmitter circuits have gradually failed to meet the requirements.…”
