Lymphoepithelioma-like Carcinoma of the Skin

Abstract: The term lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma identifies a group of nasopharingeal epithelial tumors characterized by aggregates of malignant undifferentiated cells surrounded by a dense reactive lymphoplasmacellular infiltrate. Primary cutaneous localization is rare, with approximately 30 cases reported in literature. We describe a case of primary lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the skin in a 92-year-old woman. Immunohistochemical examination was positive for cytokeratine (KL1 and EMA) as regards epithelial c… Show more

“…It is slow growing and generally asymptomatic and has usually been present in the patient from months to years [7]. Histologically, it is found in the mid to deep dermis and is nonecapsulated [7]. Histologically, LELCS is characterized by lobules, or nests of polygonal epithelioid cells surrounded by a dense infiltrate of T and B lymphocytes [5, 8] (Figure 1).…”

“…Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma has been reported in a variety of anatomic sites that include skin [13][14][15][16] , lacrimal and salivary glands 17,18 , thyroid gland 19 , thymus 20 , breast 3 , lung 21 , esophagus 22 , stomach 23 , colon 24 , hepatobiliary system 25,26 , renal pelvis [27][28][29][30] , ureter 28 , kidney 27 , bladder 31 , prostate 27 , uterine cervix 32 , vulva 33,34 , and vagina 35 . The foregoing sites typically have better outcomes than are seen with aggressive nasopharyngeal tumours; however, they do demonstrate the potential for local spread, angioinvasion, and metastasis to lymph nodes.…”
