Lymphoid environment in molecular subtypes of breast cancer

Abstract: Recently, a large body of evidence has shown that the microenvironment of invasive breast carcinoma affects its development and the patient's outcome, and vice versa-cancer cells express factors that modulate tumour milieu in terms of its composition and function. We performed an immunohistochemical (IHC) staining of 108 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue samples to investigate the relationships between T-cell, B-cell, and NK-cell infiltrate, invasive breast carcinomas molecular subtypes, and othe… Show more

“…Tumor immune infiltration was an independent prognostic factor for survival and was associated with the prognosis of malignant tumor ( Loi et al, 2013 ; Glajcar et al, 2018 ), demonstrating that tumor immune infiltration may serve as a promising target for immune-based therapy and cancer prevention ( Thompson et al, 2016 ). Therefore, we investigated whether the expression levels of TMPRSS2 in different types of cancers were correlated with immune infiltration levels.…”

“…Our recent research studies aimed at evaluation of tumor microenvironment in primary invasive breast cancer have shown associations between higher quantities of mast cells and beneficial prognostic indicators [40] and relationships between T cell, B cell, and NK cell infiltrates and adverse clinical factors [41]. These findings induced us to presently investigate infiltrates of several T cell subpopulations in this disease.…”

“…Due to significantly lower rates of immunological markers and modest immune infiltrate as compared to other subtypes, luminal A BC is considered to be non-immunogenic [ 5 , 9 , 21 , 23 , 24 ]. Thus, the vast majority of research investigating immune microenvironment in BC focus on its non-luminal types.…”

“…In clinical practice, the most commonly used molecular classification of BC is St Gallen 2015 International Expert Consensus, based on the expression of an estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), a receptor for human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2) in cancer cells and Ki67 protein, which reflects proliferation levels [ 4 , 5 ]. Currently, five molecular types of BC are distinguished: luminal type A (ER + , PR + , HER2-, low Ki67), HER2- luminal type B (ER + , low PR or high Ki67, HER2-), luminal B/HER2 + (ER + and HER2 +), HER2-positive non-luminal (ER-, PR-, HER2 +).…”
