MAC Layer Performance of Different Channel Estimation Techniques in UTRAN LTE Downlink

Abstract: Long Term Evolution (LTE) is the new standardproposed by the 3GPP to evolve towards 4G. Evolved UTRAN (E-UTRAN) specifications are currently completed and research groups are studying the performance of the last Release 8. Nevertheless, these studies lack a full modeling of the MAC layer because they either leave out retransmissions and turbo coding or assume ideal channel estimation. This paper uses an accurate LTE MAC layer simulator to perform a complete downlink LTE performance study. Results compare diffe… Show more

“…Results conclude that the prediction solution has the ability to improve throughput when the time delay is less than 5ms. Wiener‐based prediction filters are also widely found in the literature as a strategy to overcome the channel estimation errors, . This solution has also been proposed for the UL .…”

“…When the difference is low, the LMS proposed strategy shows significant improvement; however, as it increases, the LMS solution degrades the instantaneous channel information. Results conclude that the prediction solution has the ability to improve throughput when the time delay is less than 5 ms. Wiener-based prediction filters are also widely found in the literature as a strategy to overcome the channel estimation errors, [10][11][12]. This solution has also been proposed for the UL [13,14].…”

“…As mentioned before, this channel estimation is performed using reference signals in LTE. In this simulator, several real channel estimators have been implemented [116]. Then, these real channel estimators allow to emulate the penalty on the performance in a real situation due to the channel estimation.…”

“…The LTE baselines are the transmit diversity modes SFBC for two antennas and FSTD for four antennas, with Quadrature Phase-Shift Keying (QPSK) modulation. Both coherent baselines consider a channel estimator based on a Wiener filtering in frequency and in time domain [79]. This channel estimator knows the frequency and time correlation of the channel, as well as the noise power, and uses the standardized LTE reference signals for channel estimation.…”
