Mach–Zehnder Interferometers Composed of µ-Bends and µ-Branches in a Si Photonic Wire Waveguide

Abstract: We fabricated compact Mach-Zehnder interferometers consisting of-branches and/or-couplers in a Si photonic wire waveguide. Clear interference spectra with a maximum extinction ratio of more than 20 dB and an alternating light output between two output ports were observed. A high diffraction order of 300 was also demonstrated within a small foot space of 30 Â 20 mm 2 .

“…There are however amazingly few reports on this popular device in SOI wires. Ohno et al 41) fabricated 1 Â 1, 1 Â 2, and 2 Â 2 MZIs. The 1 Â 1 MZI had a 20.5 dB extinction ratio, showing that the splitting ratio of the Y-splitters used was very well balanced.…”

“…In this device, the fiber-to-fiber insertion loss for the outer input and output ports (1,4,5,8) is intrinsically higher than that for the inner ports (2,3,6,7). However, the transmission spectra and the low waveguide propagation loss suggest the fiber-to-fiber insertion loss non-uniformity is dominated by a residual in-plane rotational misalignment of the connector to the chip, making the outer input and output ports experience higher loss.…”

“…Recently, broadband low-loss connection to fiber has been demonstrated [1], however using reduced core single mode fiber. Moreover, while promising wavelength filtering functionality is being shown [2,3,4], device insertion losses and crosstalk are still problems for actual application. These issues are harder to solve with high index contrast technology and must be tackled if one wishes to integrate many functions on one chip.…”

“…We believe that this modification in the 2D numerical simulation has much the same effect on leakage of light out of the structure as would appear in a 3D simulation that modelled the effects of leakage into the lower cladding. Successful demonstration of the strongly wavelength-dependent interference effects obtainable with highly asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometers is described in [12].…”
