Magnesium Metabolism in Patients on Regular Dialysis Treatment

Abstract: 1. In eight patients being treated by chronic dialysis the relation of magnesium metabolism to the magnesium concentration of the dialysate was investigated. During four periods of 2-6 weeks the magnesium concentrations of the dialysis fluid were 0'44±0'15 mg/IOO ml, 0'70±0'24 mg/IOO ml, 1'83±0'18 mg/IOO ml and 1'97±0'21 mg/IOO ml.2. During all periods the concentration of plasma magnesium and ultrafiltrable magnesium was above normal. The concentration of erythrocyte magnesium was below normal with the lowest… Show more

“…In our patients undergoing hemodialysis with different Mg concentrations in the dialysate, the Mg serum levels paralleled the Mg level changes in the dialysis bath, thus confirming previous findings [11][12][13][14][15]. Although the changes of the Mg serum levels were statistically significant and were maintained for 6 months, they were not associated with any significant variation of the PTH serum levels.…”

“…The presence of high plasma Mg levels in patients on maintenance hemodialysis is a well-known fact [4,6,[11][12][13], confirmed in the present study. Previous authors found higher erythrocyte Mg concentration in patients treated by regular hemodialysis than in healthy persons [1][2][3][4][5][6].…”

“…However, in accordance with other authors [9,21] the magnesium content of the erythrocytes is expressed uncorrected as the 'erythrocyte magnesium content'. The results reported in this paper from healthy subjects correspond with previously reported values [9], Organ volume was chosen as the reference standard for the bone analysis.…”
