Magnetic Bearing Sets for a Flywheel System

Abstract: Abstract-This paper presents a magnetic bearing set developed to work in a flywheel energy storage system. The bearing set is composed of a Permanent Magnetic Bearing (PMB) and a Superconducting Magnetic Bearing (SMB). A new configuration of a PMB having Nd-Fe-B magnets rings and a back yoke is proposed and compared with an existing one. Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations were used to design two different PMB configurations. Measurements results of axial and radial forces were carried out in Zero Field Co… Show more

“…In all of the aforementioned works, axial and radial force/stiffness are measured as a function of axial and radial displacement, respectively, while the other dimension is maintained in its nominal position. In [13], the reduction in axial force at one particular radial displacement is given, but the effect of radial displacement is not investigated beyond this one point.…”

“…• the rotor and stator are somehow mechanically displaced from each other and a device (such as a load cell) is used to measure the force along that direction for various displacements [3], [6], [7], [10], [13]- [15];…”

“…Thereby, at least one degree of freedom has to be controlled by some other means. Even then, these types of bearings are quite attractive and due to their advantages these have been used extensively in various applications like wind turbines, flywheel systems, ventricular assist device and spacecraft applications [5][6][7]. Tian et al [8] have developed 2D analytical equations for axial and radial force in conventional and rotational magnetized stack structured PM bearings made up of 'n' number of ring pairs.…”

“…The PM rings can be radially or axially stacked (Yonnet, 1991) in order to increase the axial force. Topologies with (Sotelo, de Andrade and Ferreira, 2007) or without (Yoo, Kim, Kim, Lee, Bae, and Noh, 2011) soft magnetic materials are studied in the literature. The use of highly permeable material (back-iron) increases the performance of PM bearings for a same PM volume (Jungmayr, Marth, Amrhein, Berroth and Jeske, 2014).…”
