Magnetic resonance imaging assessment of the therapeutic effect of combined electroacupuncture and stem cells in acute peripheral nerve injury

Abstract: Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of a combination of Bone Mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) transplantation and Electroacupuncture (EA) for acute sciatic nerve injury in rats using magnetic resonance. Methods: Ninety-two male adult healthy Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into the EA+BMSCs group, EA group, MSCs group, and PBS group (control). Electroacupuncture was performed on a rat receiving EA treatment at Huantiao (GB30) and Zusanli (ST36). T2 values and diffusion tensor… Show more

“…In this study, we established an SNI rat model and administered EA intervention. Consistent with the results of previous studies [ 34 , 35 ], our findings demonstrated that EA promotes axonal extension, regeneration of myelin, and functional recovery following SNI. These results provide further direct evidence supporting the effectiveness of EA in the treatment of PNI.…”

“…After peripheral nerve repair, S100 expression increases in Schwann cells, supporting myelination (Yang et al, 2023). Additionally, S100 immunofluorescent staining is performed to evaluate axonal regeneration (Chen et al, 2022). S100 proteins play a role in regulating intracellular or extracellular functions in different cell types, as well as in many areas such as cell apoptosis, proliferation, and inflammation.…”

“…Various chemicals and growth factors are being investigated. There are suggestions about electroacupuncture, [19][20][21] Botulinum toxin, 22 various medications, and other interventions in priming or enhancing peripheral nerve regeneration; these may also apply to the CS situation. Rehabilitation techniques such as mirror therapy and biofeedback may improve cortical reorientation, associating new sensory-motor territories with appropriate parts of the sensory-motor cortex.…”
