Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Aneurysmal Bone Cyst

Abstract: A case of aneurysmal bone cyst is presented, and the radiographic, computed tomographic, and magnetic resonance imaging findings are discussed. The potential advantages of magnetic resonance imaging compared with those of computed tomography are explained. The case is presented to illustrate the potential value of magnetic resonance imaging in the evaluation of bone and soft tissue tumors.

“…459,460 ABC-like areas are found in various benign conditions, including GCT, GCG, chondroblastoma, chondromyxoid fibroma, osteoblastoma, FD, ossifying fibroma, and juvenile ossifying fibroma. 463 Pathologic Features. 14,439,453,[459][460][461] A secondary ABC shows sudden expansion, which has been likened to "blowout," in a preexisting lesion of bone.…”

“…11,18,57,65 Liquid blood in the cysts usually appears as fluid on MR images, whereas these fluid levels are not always seen on CT scans. 33,69,74 Some cysts appear hyperintense on T 1 -weighted sequences; this is thought to be due to methemoglobin. 27,30 The investigation of choice is MR imaging, however, which typically shows multiple fluid levels within the multiple cysts, the result of unclotted blood, separated from soft tissue and medullary bone.…”

“…Three‐dimensional imaging such as CT (Phillip et al, 1983) and MRI (Vergel De Dios et al, 1992; Zimmer et al, 1984) offers additional diagnostic potential to determine the nature of the mass. In MRI, they have been characterised in humans by hypointense cortical thinning and expansion with multiple internal septations filled with hyperintense fluid levels and possibly signal void in gradient echo sequences.…”
