Magnetic resonance imaging of pineal region tumours

Abstract: ObjectivesPineal lesions can present as a heterogeneous collection of benign and malignant disease conditions. Pineal lesions include germ cell tumours, neoplasms arising from the pineal parenchyma, as well as other pineal region masses.MethodsA variety of cases of pineal lesions are presented. The important clinical features and typical imaging findings of each pineal lesion are described with emphasis on their morphological appearance and signal intensity characteristics on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).C… Show more

“…Radiologically, PPTID is difficult to differentiate from other pineal tumours (Osborn et al 2012 ; Fang and Meyers 2013 ). Peripheral displacement of pineal calcification may help to confirm a tumour of pineal parenchymal origin (Osborn et al 2012 ).…”

“…Calcification of pineal region tumors is very common and tumor-specific patterns of calcification have been reported [1113]. In germinomas, pineal calcifications tend to be engulfed by the tumor, whereas in pineoblastomas calcification is often not central, but “exploded” to the periphery [12].…”

“…Pineal region metastases are very rare, occurring in 0.4% to 3.8% of patients with solid tumors as seen on autopsy reports and in 5% of patients referred to surgical management of pineal tumors. 1 , 2 …”
