A novel esterase, EstH was cloned, purified and characterized from the marine bacterium Zunongwangia sp. The purified EstH showed optimum activity at 30°C and pH 8.5 with ∼50% of original activity at 0°C. EstH was stable in high salt conditions (0-4.5M NaCl). To improve the characteristics and explore the possibilities for application, a new immobilization matrix, Fe3O4∼cellulose nano-composite, was prepared and was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Interestingly the optimal temperature of immobilized EstH elevated to 35°C. Compared to its free form, immobilized EstH showed better temperature stability (48.5% compared to 22.40% at 50°C after 30min), prolonged half-life (32h compared to 18h), higher storage stability (∼71% activity compared to ∼40% after 50days of storage), improved pH tolerance (∼73% activity at pH 4 and 10), and, more importantly, reusability (∼50% activity after 8 repetitive cycles of usage). Enzyme kinetics showed an increase in the Vmax (from 35.76 to 51.14μM/min) and Kcat (from 365s(-1) to 520s(-1)) after immobilization. The superior catalytic properties of immobilized EstH suggest its great potential in biotechnology and industrial processes.

Application of nanocomposite cellulose fibers with luminescent properties to paper functionalization

Cellulose fibres modified with the luminescent inorganic compound were obtained by using N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide as a direct solvent. The fibres were cut and introduced to the unrefined and refined paper pulp samples. Schopper-Riegler value of the pulps were measured and the laboratory paper samples were formed. Observations under UV radiation showed that the cellulose luminescent fibres were randomly and even scattered in the paper and were well visible. Measurements of the paper properties such as tensile index, Elmendorf tear resistance, Bendtsen air permeability, Bendtsen roughness, folding endurance, bursting strength and tensile energy absorption were carried out and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was used for the assessment of the paper structure and the bonding properties of the luminescent fibres. SEM analysis showed that the cellulose man-made fibres create microfibril network and have excellent compatibility with the paper. The results showed that cellulose man-made fibres with luminescent properties express similar properties to natural cellulose fibres (e.g. external fibrillation and bonding properties) which are useful for the purpose of secure paper production. Cellulose man-made fibres introduced to the paper do not have any disadvantageous impact on paper properties.

Advanced technologies seek for development of new materials and substances with extraordinary physicochemical properties at nanoscale level that boosts their increased use in everyday life. Manufacture of metal nanomaterials, including iron, carries the risk of their emission to surface waters. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) plays an important role in the transport of pollutants, such as metals which are an essential component of surface waters. The humic substances (HA), part of the SPM, interact with metal ions present in the aquatic environment. However, the previously available data on these compounds were obtained at the macro level and only scant information exist on nanomaterials. Thus, the present work has focused on the relationship between humic substances and nanosized particles, such as n-Fe2O3, in environmental acids.
