Magneto‐Optical Investigation of the Ground State of the Indirect Free Exciton in Si and Gap

Abstract

Measurements are made of the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) a t the indirect absorption edge of intrinsic Si and GaP a t low temperatures and a t magnetic fields up to5 T. By comparison with wavelength modulated spectra it is concluded that the thresholds of the indirect absorption edge for u+-and o--light are rigidly shifted against each other by the magnetic field. The direction of this shift is connected with the type of assisting phonons. This effect can be explained by the splitting of the 1s ground state of the indirect exciton using group theoretical arguments and can be used to estimate hole g-vaIues.Es wird uber Messungen des magnetischen Zirkulardichroismus (MCD) an der indirekten Absorptionskante von undotiertem Si und GaP bei tiefen Temperaturen in Magnetfeldern von bis zu 5 T berichtet. Aus dem Vergleich mit wellenlangenmodulierten Spektren wird geschlossen, daD die Stufen in der indirekten Absorptionskante fur u+-und a--Licht durch das Magnetfeld starr gegeneinander verschoben werden. Die Richtung dieser Verschiebung wird durch den Typ der assistierenden Phononen bestimmt. Dieser Effekt kann durch die Aufspaltung des Is Grundzustandes des indirekten Exzitons unter Benutzung gruppentheoretischer Methoden erklart werden. Er kann auch benutzt werden, um g-Werte von Lochern zu bestimmen.
