Mahogany fruit shell: a new low-cost adsorbent for removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solutions

Abstract: In the present study, we have introduced a new effective and economical adsorbent, Mahogany fruit shell. This adsorbent has porous nature and essential active groups are present on their surfaces which enhance its capability of adsorption. Developed adsorbent was characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, etc. techniques which also support to confirm successful adsorption. In the present study, batch adsorption experiments were carried out as a function of pH, con… Show more

“…The sharp and strong peak at 1,592 cm −1 of MB due to the presence of C = C vibration and N-H bending was merged with a peak at 1,599 cm −1 of membrane and showed a broader peak at 1,598 cm −1 in the spectrum of the dye-adsorbed membrane [ 21 ]. Like the two peaks at 1,443 cm −1 and 1,488 cm −1 , which indicates C = N stretching, the peaks at 1,220 cm −1 and 1,250 cm −1 of C = C stretching in aromatic rings of MB are merged and form broad peaks at 1,416 cm −1 and 1,232 cm −1 , respectively, in the spectrum of the dye-adsorbed membrane [ 18 ]. Finally, the peaks corresponding to the C-O stretching of the onion membrane and the C-S bending of the MB rings appeared at 1,008 cm −1 and 954 cm −1 , respectively [ 22 ].…”

“…Furthermore, the pH at point of zero charge (pHzpc), which shows the point that the acidic or basic functional groups do no contribute to the pH of the solution, was determined using the standard technique [ 18 ]. For this purpose, 50 mL of 0.01 mol.L −1 NaCl solution was placed in a 250 ml flask.…”

“…The cationic dyes are more toxic compared with anionic dyes (Etim et al 2016). The presence of MB in the water sources causes to damage the eyes of humans and animals, burning nausea, vomiting, excessive sweating, mental disorder and methemoglobinemia (Sartape et al 2015). Therefore, the treatment of effluent containing MB is necessary due to its harmful effects on human health and environment.…”

“…Table 8 summarized the parameters specified for these two models. The experimental data in Table 8 showed that MB adsorption was found to fit the pseudo-second order kinetic (Sartape et al 2015). It is observed that the values of k 1 and k 2 decreased with an increase in initial concentration.…”
