Mahr as a Form of Economic Security: A Preliminary Study

Abstract: This article discusses the practice of mahr, as a symbol of property ownership among Muslims in Malaysia. Islamic law requires that when they marry, the bridegroom give his bride mahr or a form of dower. The practice of mahr has not been complicated by prescribed forms or amounts required but should be exercised according to the society’s socio-cultural context. Commenting on the same ayah in the Quran, (As-siba'i, 1999) states that a mahr should be given in a valuable form as it symbolizes the highness of marriage.
