Main causes of bird-window collisions: a review

Abstract: Bird-window collisions are a major cause of bird mortality in the world; up to one billion birds die each year from collisions with glass panes in North America alone. However, relatively little attention had been given to this issue in the broad scientifi c literature, despite a recent increase in the number of papers. In this paper, the indexed literature on bird-window collisions was reviewed, specifi cally addressing the causal factors. The search retrieved 53 papers, mostly from North America. The factors … Show more

“…Avian collisions with windows are an issue of importance to global conservation as perhaps up to a billion birds die each year when they fly into closed windows ( Klem, 2014 ; Loss et al, 2014 ; Loss, Will & Marra, 2015 ; Ocampo-Peñuela et al, 2016 ; Schneider et al, 2018 ) and the problem is geographically widespread ( Basilio, Moreno & Piratelli, 2020 ). Though external window treatments are generally affordable they can be expensive to apply if not affixed to windows at the time of building construction.…”

“…Citizens may collect records of bird collisions from newspapers, verbal communication, online forums and blog posts without any scientific purposes. However, these data retrieved from citizen scientists can be used to publish significant results regarding risk factors and bird collision patterns in scientific journals ( Basilio et al 2020 Rebolo-Ifrán et al 2019 ). Although the quality of data produced from citizen scientists has long been a concern due to the lack of quality control processes ( Kosmala et al 2016 ), Bird Window Collision data have been successfully collected and passed the inner quality control process of EcoBank within a research project through EcoBank (Fig.…”
