Traditionally, the lean paradigm has been applied to discrete manufacturing of items that can be easily put together and taken apart. The process industry, on the other hand, transforms raw materials into cohesive units that are basically blended into a final product with parts that cannot be disassembled and then reassembled. The current lean literature provides numerous commendable examples of theory and practices of lean principles in discrete manufacturing. However, its application in process industry is limited. Furthermore, there is no systematic accounting of the lean literature in this sector, which may have contributed to lesser awareness in the industry. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review of lean manufacturing literature with respect to its applications in process industry. It contributes to the classification of literature in a manner which helps to identify strategies suitable for the adoption of lean concepts in process industry. The paper seeks to synthesise the literature with an emphasis on identifying the scope for lean in process industry and associated benefits. The review also presents an analysis of the lean tools and techniques that have been applied or have potential application in the process industry and the challenges to implement lean. We believe that such a comprehensive review will not only facilitate the adoption of lean in process industry but will also provide agenda for further research by exposing voids in the knowledge base.

Abstract:In recent years companies are paying more attention on Business Continuity Management. BCM focuses both on potential threats identification and on management of unexpected block process. These two aspects are the basis of High Reliability Organization. The HRO paradigm was developed several years ago in high-risk organizations. It integrates two relevant approaches: preventing unexpected events and resilient organizations. The aim of this study is to define a rough but effective approach to support HROs in evaluating their most "compliant" maintenance approaches. The main phases of the study are: the identification of the main HRO features (both prevention and resilient ones), the identification of the main maintenance approaches used to date and finally the evaluation of their compliance according to HRO features. The paper presents a new method to evaluate the different maintenance approaches: in addition to productivity, it's also considered the necessity to guarantee production continuity following unpredictable events.

The intent of this paper is to assert the enablers for maintenance management and indicates the strong relationship inaugurate between the enablers by using the interpretive structural modeling (ISM).A good maintenance organization presents clear roles and responsibilities, an adequate span of control, facilitation of good supervision, effective reporting, and a regular improvement culture. ISM is used here to refer to the systematic application of some elementary notions of graph theory in such a way that theoretical, conceptual, and computational leverage is exploited to efficiently construct a directed graph, or network representation, of the complex pattern of a contextual relationship among a set of elements.This work has tried to identify the barriers for successful implementation of maintenance management by manufacturing sectors to improve their performance. In this framework, total 15 barriers have been identified from literature review and expert meet from different interest areas for successful implementation of maintenance management.Effective implementation of MM will improve overall performance of organization in terms of lead time, manufacturing cost, machine breakdown and quality of product with reduction in product rejection. This paper is good for achieve continued improvement by evaluating performance, taking corrective actions, and measuring progress and prepare for future changes by anticipating needs and organizing flexibly.
