Although there is growing awareness of corporate social responsibility, sustainability reporting is still not commonly practiced by companies in Malaysia. Sustainability reporting consists of three dimensions, which include economic, environmental and social sustainability disclosure. The objective of the present study is to examine the extensiveness of sustainability reporting by 17 public listed real estate investment trust (REIT) companies. REIT sector has been chosen because it is closely related to construction activities, which could affect the environment but still plays an important role in boosting the country’s economic growth. Besides, sustainability reporting of REIT companies will also be examined based on application level of GRI. GRI is a corporate sustainability reporting framework that provides various indicators to measure these aspects comprehensively. The findings from content analysis reveals that economic aspect is highly disclosed as compared to environmental and social aspects of sustainability reporting by REIT companies. It also shows that REIT companies in Malaysia do not apply GRI in annual reports for sustainability reporting as they fail to achieve minimum application level of GRI. As there are only a few papers investigating the use of GRI for sustainability reporting by REIT sector in Malaysia, the findings from this study contribute to increase awareness among companies in REIT sector to make active contribution and increase their disclosure for economic, environmental and social aspects. Additionally, the regulators have the responsibility to enforce rules and regulations for higher disclosure of sustainability information as one mean of delivering accountability to wider stakeholders

Met dank aan Sabine van Rooij en Eveline Steingröver (Wageningen Environmental Research) voor hun bijdrage aan het casestudy-onderzoek. De vastgoedsector kan een belangrijke rol spelen in een bredere transitie naar een natuurinclusieve leefomgeving die sociaal, economisch en ecologisch veerkrachtig is. In de huidige praktijk legt groen het vaak af tegen concurrerende ruimteclaims. Met dit project zoeken we naar aanknopingen om beweging in de vastgoedsector te creëren naar meer groen in een stedelijke omgeving. Dat doen we door het ontwikkelen van een transitieaanpak voor natuurinclusief ondernemen. In deze aanpak wordt gekeken naar de vastgoedsector in brede zin (zoals grondbezitters, investeerders, architecten, vastgoedeigenaren en projectontwikkelaars). The real estate industry can play a key role in a wider transition to a nature-inclusive living environment that offers social, economic and ecological resilience. In this research, we look explicitly for a pro-active green contribution from the industry to the liveability and resilience of urban areas. To set such practices in motion, we are looking for points of departure in the considerations being made by different actors in the real estate industry. We do this by developing a transition approach for nature-inclusive enterprise. This approach looks at the real estate industry more widely, including landowners, investors, architects, property owners and project developers. Price and residential housing attributes have long been identified as key determinants of home sales and, as such, they can explain time-on-the-market (TOM). It is acknowledged, however, that there are other factors (or determinants) that influence home sales and TOM, which are of great importance but seldom taken into account in the appraisal process of residential real estate. Based on the use of fuzzy cognitive mapping, we propose a framework that adds value to the way that key determinants of housing sales and TOM are identified. This framework is the result of a process involving several residential real estate experts (i.e.appraisers and realtors), and follows a constructivist approach. Our findings suggest that the use of fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) allows the number of omitted determinants to be reduced and the understanding of the relationships between them to be improved. The strengths and weaknesses of our methodological framework are also discussed.
