Majorana box qubits

Abstract: Quantum information protected by the topology of the storage medium is expected to exhibit long coherence times. Another feature are topologically protected gates generated through braiding of Majorana bound states. However, braiding requires structures with branched topological segments which have inherent difficulties in the semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures now believed to host Majorana bound states. In this paper, we construct quantum bits taking advantage of the topological protection and non-… Show more

“…The pumping of a single electron from dot 1 → 2 then implies a unitary state transformation, |ψ → U |ψ , where U corresponds to the respective Pauli operator. This transformation law is topologically robust in the sense that it is independent of details of the protocol [20]. For instance, it does not depend on the values of the tunnel couplings nor on the precise time dependence of gate voltages.…”

“…We expect that at temperatures of a few milli-Kelvin, above-gap quasiparticles will limit the qubit lifetime. Although further work would be required to quantify the expected time scales, we note that the mechanisms for decoherence (quasiparticle poisoning, in the first place) are similar to those in other topological Majorana qubits [16,20,21,25]. In what follows, we consider protocols operating on shorter time scales where such detrimental effects can be neglected.…”

“…After completion of this work, other proposals for storing and manipulating Majorana qubits in nanowire networks have been introduced 42,43 , which also uses electron teleportation to measure the fermion parity of wellseparated Majorana zero modes. These proposals further propose measurement-based gate implementation of the Clifford group 42,43 , which goes beyond the scope of this work.…”
