“…Central to this proposition is whether the acquisition of this genetic alteration predisposes a subset of Warthin's tumor to malignant progression. The simultaneous occurrence of Warthin's tumor and mucoepidermoid carcinoma and the development of oncocytic carcinoma in some of these lesions lend circumstantial support for this probability (Ruebner and Bramhall, 1960; Gadient and Kalfayan, 1975; Onder et al, 1990; Seifert, 1997; Nagao et al, 1998; Williamson et al, 2000; Foschini et al, 2005). However, direct evidence for a histogenetic or molecular genetic link between Warthin's tumor and the malignant transformation to mucoepidermoid and oncocytic carcinomas has yet to be established (Gadient and Kalfayan, 1975; Bullerdiek et al, 1988; Mark et al, 1989, 1990; Dahlenfors et al, 1994, 1995; Hrynchak et al, 1994; Johansson et al, 1995; El‐Naggar et al, 1996; Nagao et al, 1998; Williamson et al, 2000).…”

“…Of the 32 documented cases of malignant epithelial transformation in a Warthin's tumor, 1,[3][4][5] carcinomas reported included mucoepidermoid (10 cases), 5 squamous cell (9 cases), adenocarcinoma (7 cases), undifferentiated (2 cases), anaplastic (1 case), and acinic cell (1 case). Additionally, one poorly differentiated carcinoma 3 and one poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma 6 have been previously reported. The patient with a poorly differentiated carcinoma in a Warthin's tumor underwent total parotidectomy and postoperative radiation.…”

“…Squamous cell carcinoma 7–9 and mucoepidermoid carcinoma 1,6,10,11 were reported as common types of carcinoma arising within Warthin's tumor. Other types of carcinoma arising in Warthin's tumor are oncocytic carcinoma, 12 undifferentiated carcinoma 13 and adenocarcinoma not otherwise classified 14 …”
