It is not possible to distinguish conventional, ie intraosseous, ameloblastoma from malignant ameloblastoma according to histopathologic features. It is necessary to pay special attention, especially in elderly patients, and to carry out further clinical, radiological and pathohistological diagnostic procedures, such as immunohistochemical analysis. A timely and correct diagnosis and treatment of malignant ameloblastoma require a multidisciplinary approach.

Pulmonary Malignant Ameloblastoma without Local Recurrence 31 Years after Primary Resection: A Case Report and Literature Review

A 78-year-old man with a history of surgical resection for ameloblastoma 31 years earlier visited our hospital for prolonged cough. Chest computed tomography showed multiple nodules in both lungs. Although there was no local recurrence in the mandible, the specimen taken from a transbronchoscopic bronchial biopsy showed recurrent ameloblastoma. Despite receiving no treatment, the disease in our patient remained clinically stable for 8.4 years. Chest physicians should be aware that pulmonary malignant ameloblastoma can first relapse several decades after curative surgery. In addition, pulmonary malignant ameloblastoma without local recurrence may be associated with a good prognosis.

Malignant mandibular ameloblastoma with hepatic and lung metastases: a case report Ameloblastoma is a benign rare tumor, originated in the odontogenic epithelium, is locally invasive and with high tendency to local recurrence, a variety less common is the malignant or metastasizing ameloblastoma, where more frequent sites of deployment are the lung and cervical lymph nodes, being much less frequent sites the liver and skull among others. The surgical treatment is mainly the aggressive surgery of the primary tumor and metastases. We present a case of a patient with malignant mandibular ameloblastoma with metastases in liver and lung, which was subjected to a subtotal mandibulectomy, local radiotherapy and lung and liver metastasectomy in a second time, with late recurrence of the lesion.
