Malignant degeneration of benign cystic teratomas of the ovary. Review of the literature and report of a chondrosarcoma and carcinoid tumor

Abstract: The development of cancer in a pre‐existing benign cystic teratoma of the ovary is rare. A total of 272 cases have now been recorded in the literature, although detailed reports are unavailable in 75. Excluding cases of doubtful classification, 93% of tumors were carcinomas and only 7% sarcomas. In the epithelial group squamous carcinoma was by far the most common (83%). The incidence of adenocarcinoma and argentaffinoma was approximately equal at 6%, although the number of cases of carcinoid tumor reported in… Show more

“…21,32 The most common malignancies to arise from mature teratomas in other sites are squamous carcinoma, carcinoid tumor, and adenocarcinoma. 5,14,18 Three cases of EMP have been reported within mature cystic (monodermal) teratomas of the ovary 24,27,30 and one case has been reported in a retroperitoneal teratoma, 35 but none to our knowledge within monodermal teratomas in the retrorectal/presacral area.…”

“…Although the amount of cartilage is frequently small, occasionally it may be the predominant component present (Azoury & Woodruff 1971). A single case of chondrosarcoma arising in a benign cystic teratoma (dermoid cyst) has been reported (Climie & Heath 1968,.Heath 1967. Mixed mesodermal (Mullerian) tumours of the ovary may contain large amounts of cartilage, which resembles the cartilage observed in chondrosarcoma.…”

“…Malignant degeneration is found in only 0.2-1.4% of cases. Of these, the most common are squamous cell carcinomas, with malignant melanomas rarely reported (1.6%) [47].…”
