Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the mediastinum

Abstract: A patient with malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of the mediastinum is reported. This is a very unusual site for MFH. Erosion of the thoracic aorta led to the formation of a false aneurysm, which ended fatally with rupture into the left lung. Clinical features of two other reported cases of MFH of the lung are also reviewed.

“…3 In a 1978 review of 200 cases of MFH, Weiss et al noted that the tumor occurred primarily in the extremities (lower 49%; upper 19%), followed by the abdominal cavity or retroperitoneum (16%), and only rarely in the thorax (7.5%)J Most mediastinal MFH are metastatic. MFH originating in the mediasitnum first was reported in 1982 4. We know of no prior reports of mediastinal MFH developing from a foreign body granuloma.…”

“…Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) arising in the mediastinum is very rare, and only 35 previous cases have been reported [1] since the first description in 1982 [2,3]. We report here an autopsy case of mediastinal MFH completely occluding right pulmonary artery (PA), which was clinically interpreted as PA embolization.…”

“…Histologically, this tumour is divided into four or five subtypes but storiform areas (fig 2) are their common diagnostic hallmark.3 To our knowledge, only four cases of malignant fibrous histiocytoma originating in the mediastinum have been reported since the first description in 1982. [4][5][6] Of the subtypes of malignant fibrous histiocytoma, the xanthogranulomatous variant is uncommon and has not been reported in the mediastinum.…”
