Malocclusion influence on balance and posture: a systematic review.

Abstract: Introduction: Malocclusion can be defined as an imbalance between the masticatory system and neuromuscular Temporomandibular joint. It is considered as a result of the sum of genetic, environmental and postural elements therefore of multifactorial origin. Objective: To review the existing literature if malocclusion influence in posture and balance of the subject. Methods: This is a systematic review, which searched up clinical studies, published between 2009 and 2014 in English, Portuguese and Spanish, in the … Show more

“…If there is an abnormality in one of these sensors, it will have an impact in the form of a disruption of information transmitted and posture. Therefore, proprioceptive afference from occlusion plays a vital role in maintaining proper postural control [55]. The impact of periodontal receptors on posture was analysed, among others, by Gangloff et al (2000) who found a significant change in postural control after unilateral mandibular nerve anaesthesia, resulting in a shift of weight to the opposite limb and a worsening of the posturographic parameters analysed [56].…”

“…Another scientist-Sambataro, proved that there is a correlation between scoliosis and malocclusions on the transversal plane [17]. In a systemic review by Stancker, the author analyzes 13 articles and confirms the thesis that there is an evident correspondence between human body posture and dental occlusion [18].…”

“…Then a significant increase in sway area and sway velocity postural parameters in body posture stability between subjects with myogenic TMD compared to healthy controls [29], [30]. The study concludes that malocclusion is associated with the posture of the changes, since the balance, only two studies presented this outcome and was in a considered positive for the worsening of static equilibrium, but with no clinical application, and another positive for improving dynamic balance [31]. The more extended treatment of the malocclusions closely correlated to postural disorders in children with spinal disorders [23].…”
