Managed-Pressure Drilling (MPD) Field Trials Demonstrate Technology Value

Abstract: Is this the beginning of the end of weighted mud systems? An advanced well control practice called Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) is staged to challenge the conventional drilling practice of when in doubt "weight it up". Formation overpressures have traditionally forced operators to weight-up mud systems in order to advance drilling operations while preventing formation fluids invasion. A direct consequence of increased mud weight is a dramatic reduction in drilling Rate of Penetration (ROP)… Show more

“…Under ideal circumstances, both dynamic and static pressure profiles should be inside the drilling window envelop[13, pp. 5, 8].As previously mentioned, the HP varies with MW whereas AFP significantly changes with the rheological parameters (plastic viscosity 1 , yield point 2 , thixotropy3 ), MW and pumping rate. Different fluid models reliant on the fluid type are available to approximate the AFP.The AFP losses prediction highly depends on the rheological properties of the fluid and flow rate so they should be known as precise as possible.…”

“…Applying variations of MPD maintains the bottomhole pressure within the narrow window during the entire operation process, including drilling, and connections, tripping. To prevent formation influx or lost-circulation problems, wellbore pressures should be kept as constant as possible during the entire drilling process [3][4][5]. Tripping is a constant operation in the MPD, and moving drill pipe is accompanied by a displacement of the drilling mud in wellbore [6], so the movement of drill pipe in a wellbore filled with drilling mud can generate an additional pressure.…”

“…But the conventional drilling has some limitations to deal with the problems of the narrow pressure margin, such as control downhole problems caused by circulating pressure [1][2][3], including well kick, well loss, well collapse and well struck, the big circulating pressure fluctuation and increase NPT and drilling cost. In order to meet the increasingly requirements of safety drilling in narrow density margin caused by complex geological conditions of China, managed pressure drilling (MPD) equipment and technology are required to develop.…”
