Management of inguinal hernia with benign prostatic hyperplasia: Simultaneous inguinal hernioplasty with transurethral resection of prostate

Abstract: Combining mesh hernioplasty and TURP is a better option because of low wound infection and hernia recurrence rates. Combining these two also saves the patient of having to undergo another hospital admission and surgery, besides the significant cost savings.

“…Therefore, it is considered as a matter of course that BPH composes a predisposition to hernia and aggravates hernia symptoms. Though many literatures mentioned that BPH should be a factor of inguinal hernia formation, there has been a lack of actual research study to discuss the relationship between inguinal hernia and BPH [3,6,12]. In 1982, Thompson et al had done a detailed research on 70 cases of patients who needed to undergo inguinal hernia surgery.…”

“…Both inguinal hernia and Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) are disorders with a higher frequency among elderly patients [1,2]. Though there are many patients who are diagnosed with both diseases at the same time, clinicians don't pay attention to their correlation [3]. Some reports of combined transurethral resection of prostate and inguinal hernioplasty for elderly patients were published.…”

“…There are some reports regarding combined inguinal herniorrhaphy and open or transurethral prostatectomy (2,3,8,10). Combined operative procedures under single anaesthetic session for concomitant pathologies have the advantages of greater patient satisfaction, quick convalescence, decreased hospitalisation and cost effectiveness.…”

“…They did not report any wound infections or recurrences in the combined procedure group. Bawa et al (10) recently reported the results of combined TURP and mesh hernioplasty. They separated the genital and inguinal area using a sterile drape and performed the combined procedure simultaneously.…”

“…But some of the studies showed that their occurrence together is considered as just a coexistence rather than cause and effect. 5 This study is aimed to find out whether benign prostatic hyperplasia is a significant risk factor for developing inguinal hernia in males.…”
