Management of Nasal Septum Chondrosarcoma Occurring in Elderly: A Case Report

Abstract: Chondrosarcomas (CS) are tumors affecting mainly pelvis, long bones and ribs in middle aged people; involvement of head and neck is rare and nasal septum location is exceptional. We report the follow-up of an 85-year-old patient suffering from head and neck CS. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a mass originating from nasal septum. The patient underwent to debulking surgery and adjuvant hypofractionated radiotherapy with excellent tolerability and no evidence of recurrence after 16 months. Hypofractionat… Show more

“…Chondrosarcoma with tendency for multiple recurrences and progressive spread is considered to have poor prognosis [5]. Chondrosarcoma of nasal cavity is a rare entity, and approximately 63 cases of chondrosarcoma originating from the nasal septum have been reported in review of literature from 1927 to 2017 [6]. Hereby, we are reporting a case of chondrosarcoma of nasal cavity with extension up to skull base and involvement of paranasal sinuses.…”

“…Rarely, it can develop in the craniofacial bones, 1,2 accounting for 8% of all head and neck sarcomas and only 0.1% of all head and neck malignancies 3 . Occurence of chondrosarcoma in the nasal cavity is uncommon, with less than 200 cases reported in the literature dating from 1950 4‐6 . Sinonasal chondrosarcoma is usually diagnosed in the third and fourth decade of life, 7,8 with nasal obstruction and congestion as the most frequently documented initial symptoms 5,8‐10 .…”
