Management of skin thinning and aging: review of therapies for neocollagenesis; hormones and energy devices

Abstract: Background Hormone replacement therapy and various devices exist to treat signs of aging, such as skin thinning, yet there are no reviews summarizing or evaluating their role in neocollagenesis and the associated increase in skin thickness. Objective To review the literature regarding stimulation and generation of new collagen in the dermis in two parts. Part 2 reviews oral and topical hormone replacement therapy as well as energy-based devices. Methods The PubMed database was searched for related literature. St… Show more

“…This subsequently generates a rising temperature depending on the target tissue. 7 , 8 By the time heat reaches collagen fibers, hydrogen bonds are broken; then, fibers are shortened, and greater tension is achieved. Moreover, fibroblasts are stimulated to reorganize collagen fibers into new ones with greater tensile strength.…”

“…Moreover, fibroblasts are stimulated to reorganize collagen fibers into new ones with greater tensile strength. 7 , 9 The sum of RF effect will end up stimulating neo-collagen formation and generating localized lipolysis. 10 This process brings up direct effects over the fibro-septal network situated in the subcutaneous space 11 : modifies different molecular pathways of collagen type 1, type 3 synthesis, and heat shock protein (HSP) expression.…”

“…1 In the past decade, there has been an increase in the amount of available skin tightening devices, which include those that use lasers, ultrasound, and radiofrequency energy to heat the dermis. 2,3 Collagen fibrils begin to shrink around 58°C, with much denaturation occurring around 65°C. This process involves collagen contraction and induction of a wound healing cascade, with subsequent tissue remodeling and tightening.…”

“…1 Although previous studies have reviewed dermatology-related content on the quickly growing app TikTok, 2 to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study assessing content (videos) regarding laser, light, and energy-based devices-which are among the most performed elective dermatologic procedures nation-wide. 3 In September of 2022, we searched the hashtags #lasertreatment, #lighttreatment, and #energybaseddevice, and collected the top 100 videos per hashtag. Duplicates, irrelevant videos, videos not pertaining to dermatologic applications of these devices, and videos not in English were excluded.…”
