Managing complex product development projects with design structure matrices and domain mapping matrices

Abstract: Complexity in product development (PD) projects can emanate from the product design, the development process, the development organization, the tools and technologies applied, the requirements to be met, and other domains. In each of these domains, complexity arises from the numerous elements and their multitude of relationships, such as between the components of the product being developed, between the activities to develop them, and among the people doing the activities. One approach to handing this complexi… Show more

“…These are extensions to the DSM which allow modelling of linkages between different types of element (Kusiak and Wang 1993a;Danilovic and Browning 2007;Lindemann et al 2009;Bartolomei et al 2012). Danilovic and Browning (2007) discuss application of DMMs to explore connectivity between the process domains of tasks, components, and teams. By analysing the domains independently and in combination, it is possible to identify mismatching structures.…”

“…A variety of analytical techniques (sequencing, clustering, banding, and tearing) are available to analyze information presented in DSMs [13], [14]. Accordingly, DMM (Domain Mapping Matrix) is to connect DSMs representing different domains in order to model and visualize interactions across domains [15].…”

“…In complex situations, combinations of DSM and DMM can enrich the analysis and help to analyze the dynamics of complex systems. DSM represents and visualizes interdependencies and relations be- tween items such as tasks and activities, components and subsystems, and among people and teams [16,17].…”
