Simulation is imagining … Testbed is sore reality. WSN Testbeds PrinciplesAs iterated throughout this book, WSNs are large-scale distributed embedded systems incorporating small, limited energy, and resource constrained sensor nodes communicating over wireless media. Because of their massively distributed nature, the design, implementation and evaluation of sensor network applications, middleware and communication protocols are difficult tasks. The first design steps can often be made with the help of simulations; however, they frequently force the designer to make non-realistic assumptions about traffic, failure patterns and topologies. The coming after steps of implementation, and evaluation of application performance, as well as assessment of error resilience, and other nonfunctional properties, require the use of real hardware, realistic environments and realistic experimental setups.Practically, real experiments with distributed systems like WSNs become very cumbersome if the number of nodes exceeds a few dozens. In fact, all the phases of the experiment are almost infeasible without a targeted, specialized support, specifically:

A reprodutibilidade de experimentos, essencial para a veriﬁcação da eﬁcácia/eﬁciência de contribuições cientíﬁcas, é particularmente desaﬁadora no contexto de sistemas distribuídos de larga escala. Falhas não programadas durante os experimentos (sejam nos nodos que fazem parte do sistema, ou de comunicação entre eles) podem diﬁcultar a obtenção de signiﬁcância estatística nos resultados, ou a veriﬁcação da validade dos mesmos. Para abordar esse problema propõe-se EASYEXP, uma arquitetura tolerante a falhas para garantir a reprodutibilidade de experimentos em testbeds distribuídos de baixa conﬁabilidade. No EASYEXP, nodos do ambiente de experimentação "interpretam" trabalhadores e executam ações previstas para os mesmos, seguindo o roteiro pré-deﬁnido para o experimento. Na falha de um nodo, substitui-se o mesmo por outro funcional, mantendo o contexto de execução do trabalhador interpretado por ele. Resultados obtidos mostram que o EASYEXP é capaz de manter menor variação (desvio padrão de 1.6%) e maior precisão (95.7%) entre múltiplas execuções de um mesmo experimento, quando comparado àqueles executados de forma tradicional (desvio de até 25% e precisão de apenas 72%).

This paper describes EXECO, a library that provides easy and efficient control of local or remote, standalone or parallel, processes execution, as well as tools designed for scripting distributed computing experiments on any computing platform. After discussing the EXECO internals, we illustrate its interest by presenting two experiments dealing with virtualization technologies on the Grid'5000 testbed.
