Managing planted forests for multiple uses under a changing environment in China

Abstract: Background: Planted forests are expanding throughout the world, and now account for 7% of global forest cover and provide more than 60% of global industrial round wood. Negative ecological and social impacts of the establishment of planted forests and the challenges of their multi-purpose management have also given rise to concern. China has been playing an important role in global expansion of planted forests while reducing emission from deforestation and forest degradation.

“…China has played an important role in global plantation, accounting for around 23% of the total planted forest area in the world (FAO, 2010). Plantations are widely distributed in southern regions of China where the climatic condition showing as warm and wet under the Asian monsoon climate, while it occupied 63% of the total area and 62% of the total stocking volume of those in the whole China (Liu et al, 2014a). However, the predominance of very few tree species in the plantations, uneven spatial distribution and low volumes in growing stock have generated several major challenges regarding plantations in China (Liu et al, , 2014a.…”

“…However, over the last 20 years, the country's forestry sector significantly evolved due to policy reforms and management improvements in order to ensure a sustainable development. Logging bans in natural forests and enormous afforestation and reforestation efforts have increased China's forest cover to 208 million ha, which represents nearly 22% of its geographical area compared to just 10% at the end of the 1970s, as proven by the latest national forest inventory [2]. The intensification of these activities are mainly defined by the conservation orientated Six Key Forestry Programs (SKFPs), as launched in 2000 [3][4][5][6].…”

“…With respect to the extracted log dimensions and associated log volumes of in average 0.16 m 3 , the crew was able to overcome the physical limitations of conventional manual wood extraction systems which are limited to log volumes of approximately 0.04 m 3 (see [6]). The crew also demonstrated the yarding system's technical feasibility for implementing new silvicultural objectives (e.g., [3]) by thinning operations without major damages to the remaining stand.…”

“…After years of intensive forest exploitation and resource depletion, China has implemented various national forest policy reform programs in order to conserve its remaining natural forests and to promote raw material supply from extensively established plantation forests, an example of which are the national level's Six Key Forestry Programs (SKFP) [2,3]. In addition, multiple use forestry was propagated to preserve biodiversity and enhance forest ecosystem services [3].…”
