Manchester and Oxford University Scale for the Psychopathological Assessment of Dementia

Abstract: There is increasing awareness of the importance of psychopathological and behavioral changes in dementia and a need for a technique to measure these noncognitive features. Such a schedule should keep screening questions to a minimum, include a severity measure, exclude symptoms resulting from physical illness, be as brief as possible, and not mix domains of psychopathology. To test the reliability, sensitivity, and validity of a newly developed test, 30 carers were interviewed four times during 6 weeks. An obl… Show more

“…Cabe, ainda, destacar que o instrumento utilizado para investigar a presença de morbidade psiquiátrica entre os nossos pacientes (SRQ-20) não foi, ainda, adequadamente validado para esse propósito. Escalas como o BEHAVE-AD 25 , 'Neuropsychiatric Inventory 26 ' e a 'Manchester and Oxford University Scale for the Psychopathological Assessment of Dementia 27 ' têm sido preferencialmente utilizadas com essa finalidade. No entanto, vale ressaltar que o SRQ-20 foi adequadamente validado para o rastreamento de morbidade psiquiátrica em nosso meio 11 , inclusive entre indivíduos idosos 12 .…”

“…Information obtained from carer responses to questions dealing with these issues in the CFI was used to complete the corresponding sections on the CSDD. Carers reported on the levels of behavioural disturbances and psychotic symptoms in patients using the Manchester and Oxford Scale for Psychopathological Assessment in Dementia (MOUSEPAD; Allen et al, 1996). This questionnaire has two sections: one which assesses psychotic phenomena (hallucinations, misidenti®cations, reduplications and delusions) and another which assesses behavioural disturbances (walking, eating, sleeping, sexual behaviour, aggression and emotional lability).…”

“…Thus, past research ®ndings should be interpreted as indicating that a set of symptoms most predominantly, but not exclusively, composed of NCFs show a fairly consistent relationship with carer stress. In light of this problem and the availability of several scales with good content validity for measuring NCFs (Allen et al, 1996), a re-examination of the relationship between these features and carer stress is both necessary and possible. 2.…”

“…Women seem to have lower levels of mastery (Rose-Rego et al 1998) and use less effective coping strategies (Thoits 1995), while men use mostly problem-solving approaches (Thomson et al 2004). Some authors explain sex differences by suggesting that men receive more informal support than women (Allen et al 1996, Ingersoll-Dayton et al 1996.…”
