Mandelic acid-derived organogelators: applications of their solid form in rapid and efficient remediation of marine oil spills

Abstract: Phase-selective gelation of crude oil in gelator solid form was achieved using a mandelic acid-derived organogelator for the instant and efficient remediation of marine oil spills.

“…Diffraction peaks corresponding to a d spacing of 0.45 nm and 0.39 nm can be ascribed to the hydrogen bonded β sheet like arrangement of the molecules. 39,40 The peak corresponding to a d spacing of 0.38 nm can be attributed to the weak π-π interaction between the aromatic groups, [40][41][42] and the peak at 0.9 nm could be assigned to the spacing between the layers. 43 The XRD pattern showed no peaks corresponding to molecular chain lengths.…”

“…It was shown that the gelator 134 could be applied as powder at room temperature. The mandelic acid derived gelator 135 has also showed ability to congeal crude oil, at high loading (0.3 g for 1 ml of crude oil), just by spreading its powder over oil layer of the biphasic mixture . Paige and co‐workers demonstrated the phase‐selective gelation of hexane layer by the oleylamide gelator 136 by sowing its powder to a biphasic mixture of hexane and water …”

[78] Paige and co-workers demonstrated the phase-selective gelation of hexane layer by the oleylamide gelator 136 by sowing its powder to a biphasic mixture of hexane and water. [79] In order to reduce the cost of the OSR process, the use of minimum amount of PSOGs is an important approach.…”

“…[8][9][10][11] However, due to the outstanding water solubility of MADs, their highly efficient conversion has always been the focus of attention, especially under low MAD concentration. 12 The conversion rate and aromatic aldehyde selectivity of MADs can reach 85% and 70-80%, respectively, when various nanoparticles, such as Bi(0), Co(II), and Cu(II), are employed to catalytically convert MADs in DMSO. [13][14][15][16][17] During this process, the introduction of organic solvents causes potential environmental problems.…”
