Mangrove Above-Ground Biomass and Carbon Stock in the Karimunjawa-Kemujan Islands Estimated from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-Imagery

Abstract: Blue carbon ecosystems in the Karimunjawa Islands may play a vital role in absorbing and storing the releasing carbon from the Java Sea. The present study investigated mangrove above-ground biomass (AGB) and carbon stock in the Karimunjawa-Kemujan Islands, the largest mangrove area in the Karimunjawa Islands. Taking the aerial photos from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle combined with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements, we generated Digital Surface Model (DSM) and Digital Terrain Model (DTM) with… Show more

“…In general, mangrove aboveground carbon stocks in our study sites (particularly in Pari and Lancang Kecil Islands) were comparable to those of other natural marine mangroves (Figure 2), such as in Nusa Lembongan Island (62.8 Mg C ha -1 ) [22] and Karimun Jawa Island (69.3 Mg C ha -1 ) [23]. Mangroves in the two later islands are considered well managed, as Nusa Lembongan is a part of Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area, while Karimun Jawa is a Marine National Park.…”

“…The most dominant species in Station I or mangrove vegetation was Rhizophora stylosa Griffith. The dominance of R. stylosa in mangrove vegetation was also found in several areas in Indonesia, including Weh Island, Aceh (Dewiyanti 2010), Kemujan Island, Karimunjawa (Wirasatriya et al 2022), and Pacitan, East Java (Irwansyah et al 2021;Sholiqin et al 2021;Wiraatmaja et al 2022). This is understandable since R. stylosa can grow at habitats with low to high salinity.…”

“…In terms of modeling data acquisition, constructing a CPM model requires destructive measurements of a certain number of trees to obtain branch resolution data. In contrast, the remote sensing modeling method uses remote sensing means, such as airborne multispectral, terrestrial laser scanning, and airborne laser scanning [28], to acquire data, which can effectively avoid destroying trees and significantly improve efficiency and accuracy with tremendous potential for application [50] but may also bring problems such as rising costs. As for the type of models, this study chose parametric models for the convenience of the research.…”
