Papua shoreline has been considered as the most extensive mangrove area in Indonesia and great size of their trees. It implies that the forest could be a perfect habitat for biota food web due to its high productivity. Wondama mangrove, part of Cendrawasih National Park -West Papua, had a promising mangrove forest to be discovered. Nevertheless, the forest was rarely studied due to limited access and costly, so that the scientific data was difficult to be found scientifically. A preliminary study was carried out to identify the condition of mangrove in this area. The objectives of this study was to analyze mangrove community health and structure. Canopy coverage and vegetation structure data were collected from 107 circular plots included three plot areas (radian: 5 m, 2.5 m and 1 m) which were distributed to determine three plant classes i.e. tree, sapling and seedling, respectively. Present study showed that Wondama mangrove is a pristine mangrove community. It had large size of tree trunk diameter by 19.77± 6.55 cm averagely. Its diameter size affected on low tree density which was less than 1000 tree/ha. Those two parameters were strongly negative-correlated each other. On the other hand, community canopy was highly covered mangrove area by 82.46±6.43%. Rhizophora has mostly dominated in the forest. Mangrove regeneration in Wondama was excellent referring to density and species composition of sapling-seedling levels.

ABSTRAKRegenerasi semai pada hutan mangrove merupakan salah satu bagian penting dalam proses suksesi sekunder. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis regenerasi alami semai pada areal terdegradasi di Taman Nasional Kutai, khususnya di Bontang dan Sangkima. Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah inventarisasi semai jenis-jenis mangrove yang tumbuh secara alami dan pengukuran kondisi lingkungan tanah dan air. Inventarisasi vegetasi dilakukan dengan membuat petak tunggal yang diletakkan secara sengaja pada petak tanaman rehabilitasi seluas 0,98 ha (Bontang) dan 1,04 ha (Sangkima). Sampel tanah diambil secara komposit dari lima titik pada petak pengamatan dengan kedalaman 0-30 cm dan 31-60 cm. Sampel air diambil dari setiap lokasi petak pengamatan sebanyak 200 ml. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada kawasan Bontang dan Sangkima tumbuh enam jenis mangrove, berturut-turut di kawasan Bontang terdiri dari jenis Acrostichum aureum, Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea, Rhizophora apiculata dan Ceriops tagal, sedangkan di Sangkima terdiri dari jenis Sonneratia alba, Rhizophora apiculata, dan Rhizophora mucronata. Distribusi semai mangrove untuk kawasan Bontang memiliki korelasi positif yang kuat dengan parameter lingkungan seperti tekstur tanah (Silt dan Clay), kimia tanah (KTK, N, C, Na, Ca), pasang surut, dan kimia air (salinitas, NO3, COD). Sedangkan di Sangkima memiliki korelasi positif yang kuat dengan parameter lingkungan seperti tekstur tanah (sand) dan kimia air (Mg, Al, pH, COD, BOD, DO, TSS). Untuk meningkatkan keberhasilan restorasi areal terdegradasi hutan mangrove di Taman Nasional Kutai, perlu memperhatikan aspek kesesuaian tumbuh tiap jenis mangrove berdasarkan kondisi lingkungan tiap tapak.Kata kunci: Taman Nasional Kutai, suksesi sekunder, komposisi mangrove, lingkungan (silt and clay), soil chemical (CEC, N, C, Na, Ca), tides, and water chemical (salinity, NO3 and COD). In other hand, seedlings distribution in the Sangkima area have strong positive correlation with environmental parameters of soil texture (sand) and water chemicals (Mg, Al, pH, COD, BOD, DO, and TSS). In order to speed up of the restoration in degraded areas of Kutai National Park mangrove forest, it was need attention to suitability aspects of each species based on the environmental conditions of each site.
