Among other aspects, the limited use of sample artifacts, especially towed passive network (gillnets) on the American continent, are responsible for poor knowledge about the habitat use by estuarine fish fauna (Faunce & Serafy 2006). “…Studies of faunal surveys constitute the initial step for biological studies and management of an area, by providing basic information on the composition and structure of the investigated fauna (Casatti et al 2001). However, the fact of the Todos os Santos Bay being the second largest semi-enclosed bay in Brazil and have no ichthyofaunal study in their estuaries (Andrade-Tubino et al 2008), besides the fact that studies reported for Brazilian estuaries are credited only to the north and south region (Faunce & Serafy 2006) sets up such a worrying scenario. The urgent need to know the ichthyofauna of the place so as to develop conservation and management measures corroborates the lack of these studies in estuarine environments.…”

“…Mangroves and other shallow-water tropical habitats are believed to function as nursery habitats for reef fish, sheltering large numbers of juvenile fish among the prop roots to a varying degree (Parrish 1989;Nagelkerken et al 2000Nagelkerken et al , 2002Faunce and Serafy 2006). The presence of mangroves increases abundance or biomass and enhances fish communities on nearby reefs and fisheries (Dorenbosch et al 2004(Dorenbosch et al , 2005Mumby et al 2004;Manson et al 2005).…”

“…Tropical estuaries are characterized by the presence of mangrove environments (Faunce & Serafy, 2006;Nagelkerken et al, 2008) that have high structural complexity, serving as substrates for algae development and diatom colonization (Hindell & Jenkins, 2004); therefore, tropical estuaries have high resource availability (Wang et al, 2009). Estuarine environments play an especially important role as nurseries, as they have characteristics that are advantageous for young individuals, such as high temperatures, high prey availability, and refuge from predators, which may increase growth rates and survival (Beck et al, 2001;Potter et al, 2015).…”
