Manufacturing of biocompatible nonwoven structures by using spray atomization of dissolved polymers

Abstract: The use of porous polymer materials for vascular prostheses demonstrates promising results. Fleece-like nonwoven structures can be generated by atomization of dissolved polycarbonate urethanes. This article focuses on the manufacturing process for the fleece structures. The solution is atomized through a high volume low pressure nozzle. The solvent evaporates during time of flight to target, so that small fibers are formed from each drop of solution. By using different rotating molds and positioning systems, t… Show more

“…The PU support layer was fabricated using a spray coating method (Chen et al, 2016a;Nadzeyka et al, 2014) by a spraying device composed of a spraying unit of a nozzle (SATA Minijet 3000, SATA GmbH & Co. KG. Kornwestheim, Germany), a chloroform resistant polyamide hose (length = 120 cm), a syringe (50 ml, B. Braun Medical Inc., Germany) a syringe pump (LA-100, Landgraaf Labor systeme HLL GmbH, Germany), a rotating spindle (Φ = 22 mm, L = 20 cm) and a computer drive unit.…”

“…The PCU covers were fabricated using a spray coating method (Nadzeyka et al, 2014). Nonwoven PCU covers were prepared by spraying a solution of Carbothane (7.5% w/w in chloroform) onto a rotating spindle (diameter 22 mm, length 20 cm).…”

“…After this pre-treatment, the PCU membrane was sprayed onto the stents. The spray atomization procedure with dissolved PCU (7.5 wt% (Carbothane PC-3575A, Lubrizol Corp., USA) dissolved in chloroform) A1585, AppliChem GmbH, Germany)) was described by Nadzeyka et al 11 For stent coating, a pressure of 0.8 bar, a material flow rate of 2 ml/min and a spraying duration of 5 min were adjusted to achieve a thickness of 250 lm. During spray coating both flared ends of the stents were protected with adhesive tape from PCU covering.…”
