Manufacturing of Perovskite Oxygen Carriers by Spray Granulation for Chemical Looping Combustion

Abstract: Chemical looping combustion is a technology under development that allows power production with inherent separation of CO2 during fuel combustion. Its principle relies on oxygen carrier materials transporting oxygen from air to oxidize the fuel. One challenge is to develop and produce materials with suitable chemical and physical properties, as well as low environmental impact, while minimizing the cost of production. Herein, it is demonstrated that spray granulation, which is a scalable industrial process, is… Show more

“…CaMnO3-based perovskites doped with Mg and Ti were first prepared from high purity raw materials, but the use of low cost materials as a manganese source is an interesting option for their upscaling [21][22][23]. Therefore, they were replicated using low cost raw materials [24][25].…”

“…Doping up to 15% with iron is shown to improve the spontaneous oxygen release kinetics, and widen the operational temperature range [24]. The most important dopant is titanium, as stability of the perovskite structure is shown to be enhanced by substitution of Ti on the B-site [15,25,26]. This is due to the higher enthalpy of formation of CaTiO 3 compared to CaMnO 3 [27], which stabilizes the perovskite structure at reducing conditions of the fuel reactor.…”
