Mapping disruption and resilience mechanisms in food systems

Abstract: This opinion article results from a collective analysis by the Editorial Board of Food Security. It is motivated by the ongoing covid-19 global epidemic, but expands to a broader view on the crises that disrupt food systems and threaten food security, locally to globally. Beyond the public health crisis it is causing, the current global pandemic is impacting food systems, locally and globally. Crises such as the present one can, and do, affect the stability of food production. One of the worst fears is the imp… Show more

“…Scientists warn that loss of biodiversity through the destruction of the world's forests will unleash more pandemics. Several other studies have evidenced the nexus between destruction of nature and the occurrence of novel diseases like Covid-19 (Mitchell, 2020;Savary et al, 2020). How can IS/IT researchers play their role in such a crisis situation?…”

“…The modernised, digital, and resilient supply chain systems must deal with the increasing supply chains' demands. Particularly, the start-ups with a vision of cutting costs by restructuring the supply chain operations need the hour for managing the economic shocks, conflicts, and pandemics (Bui et al 2021;Savary et al 2020). The customers radically change their purchasing behaviour and adjust their inventory positions due to such demand disruptions in the pandemics like COVID-19.…”

“…The World Bank has stated that COVID‐19 pandemic disrupts the domestic supply chain while the global supply chain remains unaffected (Ibidem). Domestic food supply was significantly affected by labor shortages, disruption of distribution systems, loss of income (Savary et al, 2020; Singh et al, 2020) as well as the massive loss of agricultural products that were impossible to transfer due to restrictive measures imposed by governments (Ma et al, 2020). For example, the food demand shocks in Southeast Asia were huge due to disruptions in the food supply chain, equivalent to a 1.4% decrease in GDP (Gregorioa & Ancog, 2020).…”
