Mapping Invasive Plant Distributions in the Florida Everglades Using the Digital Aerial Sketch Mapping Technique

Abstract: The management of exotic, invasive plants is among the most challenging undertakings of natural resource managers, particularly in large, remote landscapes. The availability of information on the distribution and abundance of invasive plants is vital for effective strategic planning yet is often unavailable because of high costs and long procurement times. This paper presents results of a large-scale invasive plant mapping effort in the Florida Everglades utilizing digital aerial sketch mapping (DASM) and eval… Show more

“…Tree islands displaying symptomatic trees were recorded using a digital aerial sketch mapping system during planned invasive plant surveys (see Rodgers et al 2014). Observers recorded presence and abundance of symptomatic swamp bay trees along fixed flight transects spaced 1-km apart, allowing for complete coverage of the survey area ( Fig.…”

“…Br. ; Polypodiales: Lygodiaceae) after hurricane-induced canopy disturbances and Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi; Sapindales: Anacardiaceae) colonizes canopy gaps and eventually dominates heavily impacted tree islands (Rodgers et al 2014). Everglades land managers are encouraged to increase invasive plant monitoring and control efforts in tree islands where substantial canopy has been lost due to laurel wilt.…”

“…Brazilian peppertree, Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi (Anacardiaceae), native to South America, is one of the most aggressive and widespread invasive species in Florida, Hawaii, and Texas (USA) (Ewel, ; Rodgers et al., ). This species constitutes a threat to natural areas, agriculture, and cattle production (Morton, ; Ewel, ; Yoshioka & Markin, ).…”

Affected areas in Florida include designated wilderness, national and state parks, and areas critical for water-flow restoration to the Everglades (Pemberton & Ferriter, 1998;Rodgers et al, 2014).
