Mapping Learning Analytics initiatives in Latin America

Abstract: The growth of Learning Analytics (LA) as a research field has been extensively documented since its beginnings. This paper provides a broad overview of the publications that Latin American authors have published in the last years by performing a quantitative review of the literature (from 2011 to 2019). A total of 282 papers were collected and categorized according to a multidimensional model composed of seven dimensions (data collected, stakeholders targeted, goals of the paper, techniques employed, maturity … Show more

For instance, Cechinel et al (2020) and Pontual Falcão et al (2020) list several research initiatives and practical applications of learning analytics in Latin America. Similarly, Ferguson et al (2015) described the perspectives of the adoption of learning analytics in Europe.…”

“…Therefore, this review starts by highlighting the educational motivation and problems that lead to the adoption of learning analytics in high schools. More specifically, we evaluated a subset of the categories proposed in previous works ( Moissa et al, 2015 ; Viberg et al, 2018 ; Cechinel et al, 2020 ), such as predicting and enhancing students learning outcomes, analyzing students’ learning processes, supporting teachers’ decisions and reflection, and support writing activities. Subsequently, as the application of learning analytics in general means using data analysis, we intended to analyze the data processing approaches used in the learning analytics adoption process.…”

“…Even though Latin America already has a number of initiatives in the field of LA ( dos Santos et al., 2017 ), they are also mainly concentrated on the use of data coming from the tertiary level ( Cechinel et al., 2020 ; Hilliger et al., 2020 ). Works that include data from primary and secondary level are very few in Latin America, as well as the works including the integration of different granularities of data sources coming from different institutions.…”

“…In an academic environment, the identification of such attributes is relevant to get some insights and information about students’ knowledge, misconceptions, and problem-solving when learning new concepts [ 10 ], and to give feedback to them. Feedback is essential for students to achieve their goals [ 11 ], and its role in the learning process is to confirm or propose changes in their knowledge [ 12 ].…”
